Canvasback \Can"vas*back`\, n. (Zool.)
A Species of duck (Aythya vallisneria), esteemed for the
delicacy of its flesh. It visits the United States in autumn;
particularly Chesapeake Bay and adjoining waters; -- so named
from the markings of the plumage on its back.
