of pertaining to, or affected with h. H. in which vision is rendered distinct by effort of the accommodation, increasing the refractive power of the eye so that the rays are focused upon the retina, is said to be Facultative; when distinct vision is possible only by extreme accommodative effort, producing squint, the h. is Relative; and when distinct vision even for distance is utterly unattainable the hypermetropia is Absolute. That part of the total hypermetropia which is kept constantly concealed by compensatory accommodative effort is called Latent; that which is apparent or can be made to appear by spontaneous relaxation of the accommodation is called Manifest. H. due to shortness of the eye is called Axial; due to changes in curvature of the refracting surfaces, Curvature h. ; and that due to deficient refractive power of the media themselves is called Index h.
