A member of the Fronde, so named from a witty member having stated in the French Parliament, in sarcastic reference to the fear in which its members held the minister, Mazarin, that they were like the boys who slung stones at each other in the streets of Paris when the policeman was absent, but who dispersed on his appearance: generally, in Europe, an opponent of the party in power; a member of the opposition.
