An American jurist and author; born in New York city, Oct. 31, 1816; died near Sag Harbor, L. I., Sept. 19, 1899. He had a distinguished career, becoming justice of the court of common pleas in 1844, first judge of the court in 1857, and chief justice in 1871, retiring in 1886. He was president of the American Geographical Society. His works include: "First Settlement of Jews in North America"; "What We Know of Maps and Map Drawing before Mercator"; and similar investigations.
