A French painter and art critic; born at Monant, 1760; died at Paris, March 5, 1826. His more notable writings are: "Annals of the Musee and of the Modern School of Fine Arts" (29 vols., 1801-17); "Landscapes and Genre Paintings in the Musee Napoleon" (4 vols., 1805-8); "The Salons of 1808-24" (13 vols.); "Selections of Paintings and Statues in the most Celebrated Foreign Museums and Cabinets" (12 vols., 1821 sq.).
