A highly poisonous substance, CO, produced by the incomplete combustion of charcoal and other carbonaceous matter. A colorless, tasteless gas of a peculiar odor, readily inflammable, and burning with a bluish flame. It acts as an energetic respiratory poison when inhaled, combining with hemoglobin of the blood to form carbon monoxid hemoglobin, which will no longer take up oxygen.
