pseudonym of Gustave von Berneck, a German novelist and writer on military topics; born in Kirchhain, Niederlausitz, Oct. 28, 1803; died at Berlin, July 8, 1871. His novels have for the most part a historical background, and are meritorious without being great. "The Hand of the Stranger", "The First Robbery in Germany", and "Katharina von Schwarzburg", are noteworthy in a somewhat extended list. He wrote a play or two, translated Dante's "Divine Comedy", and completed a history of the art of war.
