An American educator and author; born at Staunton, Va., 1856. He has written much on political and literary topics for the magazines and reviews. His books are: "Congressional Government: A Study of American Politics" (1885), a work popular at home and much used by foreign publicists; "The State: Elements of Historical and Practical Politics" (1889); "Division and Reunion", in "Epochs of American History" (1893); and "A History of the American People" (1902). He is now president of Princeton University.
