An American journalist and poet; born at Philadelphia, Aug. 21, 1808; died 1894. "A Journey through Kentucky and Mississippi", published in the Cincinnati Chronicle in 1828, first drew public attention to him. He wrote "The Wreck of the Hornet". a poem; and edited "Selections from the Political Literature of the West" (1841). "Fruit Culture in the Ohio Valley" is among the best of his agricultural writings. "Miami Woods", and "A Golden Wedding and Other Poems", were published in 1881.
