An American general, lawyer, and novelist; born at Brookville, Ind., April 10, 1827. He served in the Mexican War as lieutenant, and in the Civil War attained the rank of major-general. He was Minister to Turkey 1881-85. His works include: "The Fair God" (1873); "Ben-Hur" (1880); "The Life of Gen. Benjamin Harrison" (1888); "Commodus: A Tragedy" (1889); "The Boyhood of Christ" (1889); "The Prince of India" (1893). Died, Crawfordsville, Feb. 15, 1905.
