An American poet and dramatist; born in Baltimore, Md., 1815; died in Washington, 1868. He was author of "India and Other Poems" (St. Louis, 1842), the first book of poetry published west of the Mississippi: and the tragedies "Osceola", successfully performed in Cincinnati (1838), and "Cortez" (Washington, 1857).
