The root of this plant has a smell not unlike that of cloves. Taste bitterish, austere; virtues yielded to water and alcohol. It has been used in intermittents, dysentery, chronic diarrhoea, debility.
Common avens; found in Europe. Its rhizome yields a volatile oil, lignin, and tannin. It has been used in Europe as an astringent.
