the name of the Salso'la Soda, a plant which contains a large quantity of one of the principal alkalis-soda. The alkalis are substances soluble in water, possessing generally a urinous, acrid, and caustic taste, turning the syrup of violets green, and restoring to blue infusion of litmus, which has been reddened by acids; reddening the yellow of turmeric, and having the greatest tendency to unite with acids, whose character they modify, and form salts with them. In medicine we understand by this term Potassa, Soda, or Ammonia.
