An American miscellaneous writer; born in Somerset, Pa., July 23, 1806; died in Washington, D. C., April 5, 1885. Prior to the Civil War he was well known as an abolitionist, a forceful writer, and an eloquent speaker. His publications include: "Periscopics" (1854); "The Enchanted Beauty" (1855); "Life of Dr. E. K. Kane" (1857); "Questions of the Day" (1871); and "Conversations on Political Economy" (1882).
