A distinguished German prelate; born at Munster, Dec. 25, 1811; died at Burghausen, Bavaria, July 13, 1877. One of the ablest of German ultramontanists; bishop of Mentz (1850), for which diocese he obtained special privileges; and member of the first Reichstag (1871). He wrote on the questions of the day. Among his works may be mentioned: "Freedom, Authority, and Church" (7th ed. 1862); "The Labor Question and Christianity" (3d ed. 1864), which even Lassalle praised; "Germany after the War of 1866" (6th ed. 1867).
