One of the constants of chemical compounds. It represents the weight of a given compound in terms of the weight of an equal volume of water at the maximum density of water (40). When a substance is dissolved in water or any other solvent, the s. g. of the solution is changed according to the concentration. On the other hand, we can easily and rapidly determine the amount of a solid in a given solution from its s. g. by the uses of the hydrometer.
