A Scottish poet; born in his father's castle of Kinaldie in 1570; died in London in February 1638. His Latin and English verses made him famous at the courts of James I. and Charles I., where he held posts of honor and was knighted in 1612. He also wrote in Greek and French. Ayton is supposed to have been the author of "Auld Lang Syne", which was remodeled by Burns.
