From the Italian Orvietano. An electuary regarded as an invaluable antidote, and composed of Old theriac, Dried vipers, Scorzonera, Carlina, Imperatorium, Angelica, Bistort, Rosemary, Juniper, Cinnamon, Cloves, Mace, Honey, and a crowd of other substances. Its medical properties resembled, in some respects, those of the theriac. It was so called, according to some, because invented by Orvietano, a celebrated charlatan; or, according to others, from Orvieto, a town in Italy.
