Inflammation of a muscle. When affecting the muscular fibre itself it is called Parenchymatous m.; when affecting the connective-tissue envelope and septa it constitutes Interstitial m. (muscular cirrhosis). The former occurs especially in febrile diseases, and is characterized by loss of striation and a granular opaque condition of the fibre. M. ossificans, m. in which bony tissue is deposited; particularly, a chronic disease (M. ossificans progressiva), marked by progressive ossification of the muscles and their sheaths, with the formation of exostoses in the bones. Primary multiple m., pesudotrichinosis; a febrile disease, probably toxic in origin and usually fatal; marked by oedema and inflammation of the skin and muscles in various parts of the body.
