(1800-1872), born and educated in Germany, came to America in 1827. He published the Encyclopaedia Americana in 1832. He ardently upheld the Union during the Civil War, and was often consulted by the executive. He wrote many important political works, among them a "Manual of Political Ethics," "Legal and Political Hermeneutics" and "Civil Liberty and Self-Government." He was professor in the South Carolina College from 1838 to 1856 and in Columbia College from 1857 to 1872.
