A distinguished Italian historian; born at Florence, March 6, 1483; died May 23, 1540. He was a prominent figure in the Italian public life of his time. His principal work, "History of Italy", recounts without passion or partisanship the political events of 1492-1534; it was published in 1561-64, and republished ten times in the fifty years succeeding. Long after his death, appeared as "Unpublished Works" (1857-67, 10 vols.) his "Political Reminiscences", a series of aphorisms on politics; "The Government of Florence", an essay on the forms of government suited for an Italian State; and a "History of Florence".
