An American mathematical and religious writer; born at Green's Farms, Fairfield County, Conn., Oct. 21, 1818. He graduated from Yale in 1839, and became pastor of the Congregational Church in Lyme, Conn., in 1850. Since 1868 he has been a lecturer at Amherst College. Among his works are: "A Treatise on the Application of the Calculus to the Theory of Neptune" (1848); "A Song of the Sea" (1873); "Aleph, the Chaldean" (1891). He died in 1907.
