Syn.: elementary cell, formative cell, primary cell, primitive cell, primordial cell. One of the cells which arise from the division of the ovum; a term especially employed when the process of segmentation has advanced so far that the cells are very small. These cells are so called because they give rise to the various tissues and organs of the embryo.
