A French educator and author; born at Niort, Deux-Sevres, May 11, 1803; died in Paris, May 31, 1883. He filled different positions as a teacher and professor at Strasburg, Paris, Caen, etc., and was sent to England and the United States by the minister of public instruction to study their educational systems. His publications on educational and literary subjects include: "Norman Writers of the Seventeenth Century" (1857); "History of the Government of Normandy" (9 vols., 1863-73); "Public Instruction in the United States" (1869); "Dictionary of the French Language in the Twelfth and Thirteenth Centuries" (1873).
