A French poet; born in the Isle of Reunion, 1838. He was educated for a civil-service career, but has devoted his highest capacities to verse. His maiden volume, "Aspirations" (1858), sounds a new note; while "Closed Lips" (1867) and "The Lovers" (1879) maintain him in the supremacy he has attained in the so-called "Parnassian" school.
