A celebrated French Orientalist; born at Loos, France, Aug. 5, 1837. Professor of Japanese at the Special School of Languages, since 1868, and founder of the International Congress of Orientalists. Among his numerous works are: "Asiatic Studies" (1864); "The Origin of Language" (1869); "Japanese Anthology" (1871); "A Grammar of the Chinese Language" (London, 1874) "Japanese Religion" (1881); "The Written Documents of American Antiquity" (1882); "Introduction into the Study of Japanese Literature".
