An English naturalist and writer of travels; born at Exeter, Nov. 9, 1807; died Nov. 27, 1896. He accompanied Chesney's Euphrates expedition as physician and naturalist, and was sent in 1838 by the Geographical Society and the Society for the Diffusion of Christian Knowledge, to make investigations in Asia Minor and Kurdistan. His chief works are: "Researches in Assyria, Babylonia, etc". (1838); "Travels and Researches in Asia Minor, Mesopotomia, etc". (1842); "Travels in the Track of the 10,000 Greeks" (1844); "Wanderings in Every Clime" (1870); "A Personal Narrative of the Euphrates Expedition" (2 vols., 1888). He was for a time proprietor and editor of the New Monthly Magazine.
