An American musical and dramatic critic; born in Massachusetts in 1848. He is on the staff of the Boston Evening Transcript. His chief work is "Musicians and Music Lovers, and Other Essays". He is also the translator of Zola's "Jacques Damour", and of "Hector Berlioz" (1879); "The Opera Past and Present".
