An American novelist; born in Virginia about 1800; died in Savannah, Ga., about 1850. He was professionally a physician, but wrote a number of spirited romances founded on incidents in American history. His best work is "The Cavaliers of Virginia, or the Recluse of Jamestown, an Historical Romance of the Old Dominion" (1832). He is the author also of "The Knights of the Horse-Shoe, a Traditionary Tale of the Cocked Hat Gentry in the Old Dominion" (1845).
