In Ireland, cylindrical edifices, from eighty to a hundred and twenty feet high, with a door eight or ten feet from the ground, and with narrow openings at the top. Dr. Petrie (Eccles. Arch, of Ireland, i. 12) believes that they are simply detached Campaniles of churches, built so as to be available for defence. There are sixty-two such towers in Ireland, and two in Scotland-at Abernethy and Brechin.
