(1805-1852), was a member of the Massachusetts Legislature from 1833 to 1837. He made a powerful and famous appeal for the abolition of capital punishment. He was counsel for Thomas Sims in his celebrated fugitive slave case. He was U.S. District Attorney for Massachusetts from 1845 to 1849, and served in the U.S. Senate as a Democrat from 1851 to 1852. He was an eloquent speaker on moral, political and educational reforms.
