A Greek philosopher; born at Elis about 360 B. C., and supposed to have lived to the age of 90. In his earlier years he accompanied Alexander the Great on his expedition to India. He is usually looked upon as the founder of the older School of Skeptics, doubting the existence of anything like positive knowledge. He passed much of his life in solitude, showing a stoical firmness of mind in all danger of pain. His countrymen made him high priest. He left nothing in writing, being known only through the works of others.
