Arises from the internal maxillary artery, at the bottom of the zygomatic fossa, and enters the pterygoid canal with the nerve of the same name, to proceed to be distributed on the Eustachian tube and velum palati. The name, pterygoid arteries, is likewise given to the branches, which the internal maxillary and some of its divisions, as the meningea media, and posterior temporalis profunda, furnish to the pterygoid muscles, behind the neck of the lower jaw.
