Laws for the relief of the poor. By those of Elizabeth, the poor were entitled to relief in the parish where they had their Settlement. By the amended law of 1833, the smaller parishes were classified into unions, each administered by a board of guardians of the poor, subject to the rules of the Poor Law Board. The funds needed are raised by poor rates, assessed on the ratable value of real property. See Overseers of the poor.
