The name by which the Greeks and Romans knew the Straits of Gibraltar, the pillars being the two hills Abila on the African side, and on the European Calpe, which has received its present name, Gibel al Tarik, or the Rock of Taric, from the Arab general who destroyed the Gothic monarchy of Spain in the person of Roderick.
