A polymeric modification, C6H12O3, of aldehyd. It is a strong diuretic. It has been used as a hypnotic, but gives a persistent unpleasant odor to the breath. It has been recommended in tetanus, mania, melancholia, and other nervous affections, and also as an antidote to strychnin, brucin, thebain, and picrotoxin. [Lat.]
