flax, Goth. lein linen, L. linum flax, linen, Gr. li`non. Cf.

1. Thread or cloth made of flax or (rarely) of hemp; -- used
in a general sense to include cambric, shirting, sheeting,
towels, tablecloths, etc. ``In linen white as milk.''
