(1763-1847), jurist, was a member of the New York Legislature in 1790 and 1792. He was a Judge of the New York Supreme Court from 1798 to 1804, and Chief Justice from 1804 to 1814. He was Chancellor of New York from 1814 to 1823. He published " Commentaries on American Law," which is the standard general treatise on American law.
