An American educator and miscellaneous writer; born at Pass Christian, Miss., 1848. He is now professor of Teutonic languages at the University of Virginia. He has written: "A Group of Poets and their Haunts" (1875); "Greek Vignettes" (1878); "Spain in Profile" (1879); "History of Spain" (1881); "Autrefois: Tales of Old New Orleans and Elsewhere" (1888); etc.
