An American historian; born near Amherst, Mass., April 16, 1850. After a course of study at Amherst, Heidelberg, and Berlin, he was appointed instructor in history at Johns Hopkins University, and is now professor there. He is the editor of "Johns Hopkins University Studies in Historical and Political Science", and author of "The Study of History in American Colleges and Universities" and "Jefferson and Higher Education in Virginia". Died in 1901.
