A species of C. supposed to be indigenous to Greece and Asia Minor, where it has long been in cultivation. The stigmata, the saffron of commerce, were formerly considered highly stimulant and antispasmodic, but in Great Britain and the United States they are used only as a coloring agent. See saffron.
