(Bot.) Paliurus aculeatus, ord. Rhamnaceae; of S. Europe and W. Asia; a deciduous thorny shrub. Another Paliurus bears the name of C. T. also, i.e. Zizyphus Spina Christi, used for hedges; a native of countries bordering on the Mediterranean and of W. Asia. Opinions differ as to the identification of the "thorns" of Matt, xxvii. 29.
