This vein was so called by Galen. It forms a communication between the V. cava inferior and V. cava superior, permitting the blood to pass freely between the two. It rises from the vena cava inferior, or from one of the lumbar or renal veins, passes through the diaphragm, ascends along the spine to the right of the aorta and thoracic duct, and opens into the V. cava superior, where it penetrates the pericardium. On the left side, the Semi-Azygos, Left bronchial or left superior intercostal vein, Vena demi-azygos, V. hemi-azyga, Veine petite prelombo-thorocique-( Ch.), presents, in miniature, nearly the same arrangement.
