A perennial herbaceous European plant, the root of which resembles that of the black hellebore. The root is cathartic, and sometimes emetic, and in over-loses may produce dangerous consequences. Actce'a America'na, of which there are two varieties, A. alba and A. rubra,-white and red rohosh,-is indigenous in the United States. It has the same properties as A. spicata.
