A compound of potassium and tartaric acid. Normal potassium tartrate (the potassium tartrate of the pharmacopeias), K2C4H4O6 -according to the Br. Ph., (CHOH)COOH.COOK-occurs as small transparent or white crystals or as a white powder of bitterish saline taste, readily soluble in water. Acid potassium tartrate, potassium bitartrate, or cream of tartar. Lat., potassii bitartras [U. S. Ph.] (tartras acidus [Br. Ph.]).
