Mercuric iodid, red m. iodid. A substance, Hg2I2, occurring as a brilliant scarlet crystalline powder, devoid of taste and odor, almost insoluble in water, and soluble with difficulty in alcohol. It dissolves in a solution of potassium iodid or of corrosive sublimate. It is used as an alterative in syphilis, in various skin diseases, especially eczema, and in iritis; externally.
