A German historian; born in Berlin, Oct. 15, 1811; died in Anspach, July 21, 1886. Politics interested him in early years, but his later energies were given to elaborate historical investigations, of which the best fruits are: "The Crisis of the Reformation" (1845); "Feudalism and Aristocracy" (1858); and the masterpiece "Ancient History" (1852-57).
