An American poet; born at Salem, Mass., 1748; died at Portsmouth, N. H., March 29, 1808. During the Revolutionary war he wrote a ballad, "War and Washington", which was very popular; in his epilogue (1780) to Addison's "Cato" occur the lines "No pent-up Utica contracts your powers"; his "Miscellaneous Poems" were collected and published in 1801.
