a fugitive slave case. George Jones, a respectable colored man, was arrested in New York in 1836, on a fictitious charge of assault and battery. He was taken before Recorder Riker and was released to his kidnappers as their property, their word being taken as sufficient evidence. This was a favorite method of kidnapping.
