Born in Massachusetts in 1809, is an eminent physician, but is famed chiefly in literature. He was one of the founders of the Atlantic Monthly in 1857. In this periodical appeared his "Autocrat of the Breakfast Table," "Professor at the Breakfast Table," "Elsie Venner," etc. He has written many most popular poems, and is author of memoirs of John Lothrop Motley and Ralph Waldo Emerson.
